What is the Medical Billing and Coding Pathway?
The Medical Billing and Coding pathway prepares students to perform the tasks of gathering and reviewing patient data, auditing bills, assigning codes for diagnoses and procedures, and submitting insurance claims for reimbursement. This pathway can start you on a journey toward a variety of related occupations within the health services field.
What Career Opportunities are Available?
There are a number of opportunities for employment within this field. Hospitals, physician's offices, surgery centers, nursing homes, and dental offices all must produce the type of documentation that relies on these skills. A career in Medical Billing and Coding may also provide opportunities to work from home.
What Courses Will I Take?
The Career Connect Medical Billing and Coding pathway consists of the following courses:
- Medical Terminology
- Anatomy and Physiology I
- Anatomy and Physiology II
- Essentials of Health Information Management I
- Medical Coding 1
- Medical Coding 2
Upon completion of this pathway, students will be prepared to complete the Billing and Coding Specialist certification through the National Health Career Association. The cost of the exam is included in the Career Connect program tuition. The exam will be taken in person at a local testing facility in the student’s area.

2016 Median Pay: $38,040 per year, $18.29 per hour

Job Outlook: Employment is projected to grow 13% from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages.
