What is the Medical Transcription Pathway?
The Medical Transcription Pathway trains students to listen to recordings of reports dictated by doctors and other healthcare workers, and to interpret them to create written reports. Medical Transcriptionists use medical terminology and abbreviations in preparing patients medical histories and other documents. This Career Connect pathway can lead to a variety of related career specialties within the Health Services field.
What Career Opportunities are Available?
Career opportunities include positions in hospitals, physician's offices, and at third-party transcript service companies. With experience, this occupation can lead to more advanced levels of work in medical transcription. There are also opportunities for self-employment. Working from home is also possible within some companies.
Medical Transcription skills can also be applied to other health-related careers such as Medical Billing, Medical Assistants, and Medical Records Technicians.
What Courses Will I Take?
The Career Connect Medical Transcription pathway calls for the student to complete the following courses:
- Medical Terminology
- Anatomy and Physiology I
- Anatomy and Physiology II
- Essentials of Health Information Management I
- Beginning Medical Transcription 1
- Beginning Medical Transcription 2
Upon completion of the pathway, students will be prepared for the Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist credentialing exam through the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity. The cost of this exam is included in the Career Connect program tuition.* Students can take the exam in person at a local testing facility in the student’s area, or online using online proctoring.
