6 Tips for Back to School Time

Get ready for a great year with Keystone’s 6 Tips for Back to School—from setting up a focused study space to joining clubs and connecting with mentors. Discover how families and students across our community build routines that make online learning engaging, organized, and fun.

6 Tips for Back to School Time

The start of a new school year is an exciting time—fresh notebooks, new classes, and a renewed sense of motivation. At Keystone, we know this season is also a chance to reflect on what worked last year, adjust routines, and set up students for success. To help, we’ve gathered some real tips from online students and families across our community.

Create a Learning Space That Works

Having a dedicated, comfortable workspace can make all the difference. Ask yourself, does your student have a quiet area free from distractions? Is the chair comfortable for longer study sessions? Can supplies be reached easily?

Pro Tip: Use shelves or rolling carts to organize books, craft materials, or science kits. Some families like to hang subject-themed posters to make the space inspiring.

Stock Up on the Right Supplies

Even in online school, hands-on materials matter. Many Keystone students keep a stack of notebooks and pencils handy. Writing out notes helps with retention, even when coursework is digital.

Student Insight: “Even though it’s online, I still buy new notebooks every year. Writing notes helps me focus.” – Julie, 9th grade

Pro Tip: Consider involving your student in shopping for supplies. This builds ownership and ensures they have what they need to succeed.

Set a Weekly Schedule

Planning out the week in advance keeps students from feeling overwhelmed. Some families follow a block schedule—focusing on two or three subjects per day. Others prefer shorter sessions across all courses daily.

Parent Insight: “We learned that doing math in the morning worked best for our child, while afternoons were better for reading and clubs.”

Pro Tip: Sit down every Sunday evening to map out lessons for the week. Experiment until you find what works best for your student. For returning families, think about what did and didn’t work in previous years, and create a plan to reflect what helps your child thrive.

Stay Connected Through Clubs and Programs

School is more than academics, it’s also about connection. Online clubs let students explore passions and meet peers. Baking Club, National Honor Society, Book Club, and art clubs are popular across Keystone and partner schools.

Julie, 9th grade: “I love when clubs collaborate—one day, Baking Club and Book Club made Harry Potter cookies!”

Pro Tip: Encourage your student to try at least one club. It’s a great way to make friends and feel part of a community.

Embrace Mentorship and Support

One of the biggest strengths of the Keystone community is how students support one another. Peer mentor programs pair new students with experienced ones.

Julie, 9th grade: “My mentor last year was amazing—I could message her anytime. Now, I get to mentor new students and help them the same way.”

And don’t forget: Keystone teachers and Student Success Advisors are always here to help parents and students navigate challenges.

Communication is Key

Online learning requires a different style of communication. Students often connect through chat during class and set up group chats outside of it. Keystone students also use K12 Zone, a virtual campus where they can meet classmates, join events, and stay social.

Pro Tip: Encourage your student to reach out—to teachers, mentors, and peers. Building those connections creates confidence.

Back to school isn't just about supplies and schedules—it’s about building habits, finding support, and discovering joy in learning. Each student’s journey is unique, and what works this year may evolve next year.

The most important step? Involve your student in the planning. Ask what helps them focus, what clubs they’re excited about, and how they’d like to set up their space. Their voice matters in shaping their success.

At Keystone, we’re honored to walk alongside families each step of the way. We hope you have a great school year!
