In this course, students read and analyze works of American literature from colonial to contemporary times, including poetry, short stories, novels, drama, and nonfiction. The literary works provide opportunities for critical writing, creative projects, and online discussions. Students develop vocabulary skills and refresh their knowledge of grammar, usage, and mechanics in preparation for standardized tests. Students enrolled in this challenging course will also complete independent projects that deepen their understanding of the themes and ideas presented in the curriculum.Prerequisites- English 10 (or equivalent) When enrolling in the full year option of this course it will be delivered in two semesters. Transcripts will reflect each semester separatelyCourse Eligibility Recommendation: Students in all high school grade levels can take honors courses if they have earned a grade of 90% or higher in their prior year course in that academic category (ex. 92% in English 8 can take English 9 Honors).

AP English Literature and Composition immerses students in novels, plays, poems, and short stories from various periods. Students read and write daily, using a variety of multimedia and interactive activities, interpretive writing assignments, and class discussions to assess and improve their skills and knowledge. The course places special emphasis on reading comprehension, structural and critical analysis of written works, literary vocabulary, and recognizing and understanding literary devices. The key foci of this course are comprehension, interpretation, and analysis. More specifically, the course focuses on close and thematic reading skills. The writing students undertake is overwhelmingly of an analytical nature; students analyze meaning and how meaning is created. The equivalent of an introductory college level survey class, this course prepares students for the AP Exam and for further study in creative writing, communications, journalism, literature, and composition. Access to this AP course is outside of our usual learning management system. Instructions for access will be sent to the support email after enrollment is processed. Course Eligibility Recommendation: Students can take AP courses in 10th, 11th or 12th grade provided they have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

They analyze the themes, styles, and structures of these texts and make thematic connections among diverse authors, periods, and settings. Students work independently on many of their analyses and engage in creative collaboration with their peers. Students also practice test-taking skills for standardized assessments in critical reading and writing.Prerequisite: English 9, 10, 11 (or equivalent)When enrolling in the full year option of this course it will be delivered in two semesters. Students read selections from British and world literature in a loosely organized chronological framework. They analyze the themes, styles, and structures of these texts and make thematic connections among diverse authors, periods, and settings. Students complete guided and independent writing assignments that refine their analytical skills. They have opportunities for creative expression in projects of their choice. Students also practice test-taking skills for standardized assessments in critical reading and writing. Prerequisite: English 9, 10, 11 (or equivalent).

Since the eighteenth century, Gothic tales have influenced fiction writers and fascinated readers. This course focuses on the major themes found in Gothic literature and demonstrates how the core writing drivers produce a suspenseful environment for readers. It presents some of the recurring themes and elements found in the genre. As they complete the course, students gain an understanding of and an appreciation for the complex nature of Gothic literature.

In this World Literature course, students will be exposed to many types of literature from around the globe. The course will cover the classics, some you may have heard of, and some you haven’t. Students will learn about culture, geography, and religious beliefs that go along with the literature and authors. In addition to the classics, students will be exposed to modern and contemporary authors and literature. Students will write a research paper and keep a journal of writing activities. This course has a heavy emphasis on writing, so be prepared to share your thoughts.
