Algebra 1 teaches students fundamental concepts such as integers, linear equations, how to add, subtract, multiply and divide monomials and polynomials, factoring polynomials and solving quadratic equations.

Algebra 2 is a cumulative review of all Algebra topics and is a fundamental course that is completed before the study of Trigonometry/PreCalculus. The course content is also the last mathematics course covered on the SAT's. Once completed with the course, students will be able to correctly apply the order of operations to evaluate expressions and use formulas; solve systems of linear equations using the graphing method; perform operations on polynomials; add, subtract, multiply, and divide functions; identify an arithmetic or geometric sequence; and write and graph equations of parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas.

The American Government course will expose students to a vast amount of information on what defines America, and who America is as a nation. Starting at the very roots and foundation of democracy students will explore the founding fathers and their task of creating the republic. Students will also dive into other forms of government and how America's government operates today. By the end of this course, student will be able to become a more active and informed citizen, along with making educated political decisions.

Anatomy and Physiology introduces the students to the major body systems and how they work together to maintain homeostasis (balance) in the human body. Each section includes a description of the organ structures and underlying tissues and cells in the system, the disorders and diseases associated with each, as well as how they work together to perform a common function.

Art and Music Appreciation introduces the major themes, influences, and personalities in art and music that shaped most of Western cultural heritage. A dual track approach is used by the Learning Guide and provides a basis for synthesis. This is a full credit course that combines both the Art Appreciation and Music Appreciation half credit courses. This is a textbook based course that comes with a printed learning guide.

Biology with Lab introduces the basic principles and concepts in Biology. This course comes with a laboratory kit that follows the hands on labs that are incorporated throughout the course. Emphasis is placed on the study of life, the continuity of life, and the relationship between living organisms and the environment. Students will explore the concepts of evolution and biodiversity and will discover the importance of the animal and plant kingdoms. They will distinguish between the major systems of the human body, identify the parts and functions of each system and analyze how the systems interact with each other in order to sustain life. Business Law focuses on the application of law to business operations and transactions in the United States. It is designed to provide students with an overview of the legal system, including statutes and regulations that affect businesses, families, and individuals in a variety of ways. All of you will eventually assume the role of citizen, worker, and consumer in society. This course will provide you with a solid foundation in understanding legal issues that impact businesses, but will also focus on “real life” situations that rely on the law. These “real life” situations may apply to you someday. Business topics in this course focus on legal regulations, which govern modern society including Internet privacy and security, ethics, and computer crime. Other topics covered include an exploration of contracts, agency, and negotiable instruments. Personal Finance topics include buying and insuring a car, renting an apartment, buying a home, marriage, divorce, and the use of personal credit. Some of the most common crimes and torts are discussed, including traffic violations, search and seizure laws, vandalism, and shoplifting. You will also explore and analyze “real life”

The study of chemistry is the study of the world around you. It includes the particles that make up matter and the reactions between the different types of matter. Though out the course, theories of the atom and its components will be studied. The student will learn the quantitative basis for chemical reactions and changes in state. Chemistry is the study of matter, the many changes it undergoes, and how energy transfers during these processes.

Civics describes the organization and operation of government on the local, state, and national levels. Students’ roles in family, school, and the economy are investigated with an emphasis on their rights and responsibilities. Students will also develop an understanding of the challenges faced with U.S. foreign policy.

Consumer Math is designed to teach students the importance of managing their personal finances, allowing them to excel in everyday life. Students will review and practice math skills and learn practical application of the concepts in areas including finance, credit cards, taxes, budgeting, banking, and home expenses.

In this course you will learn the step by step process of creative writing across multiple genres. The course opens with the basics such as finding and keeping a focus as well as avoiding writer’s block. Since writing and reading are closely related, you will learn how to analyze and interpret literature by performing close readings. Analysis and close reading will serve as a role model for your future writings. You will build your foundation of knowledge by learning and understanding specific, individual building blocks and strategies of creative writing. Once you have mastered the foundational information, you will write your own works in multiple genres and forms.

Earth science begins with studying the Earth and its composition. The course is a survey of the spheres of the Earth. It includes plate tectonics which includes earthquakes and volcanoes. Natural resources, both renewable and non-renewable are studied, including the methods to conserve the resources. Continuing away from Earth, the course includes a study of the Sun, moon, and the planets. A comparison of the Sun with other stars is included in the study of the universe.

Basic economic theory is the foundation of this course, as students learn how fundamental decisions about the four factors of production are made. Key topics covered include the law of supply and demand; saving, borrowing, and spending; the Federal Reserve System and the money supply; and the role of government in an open market economy.

Environmental Science is an upper-level science course and is a multidisciplinary field that draws from all the sciences in addition to other fields. This course will help students better understand the relationship between humans and the world in which we live. Environmental science applies the principles of pure sciences such as biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, and others. Students more closely examine the value of water, impact of pollution, agricultural methods, and human effect and impact on the environment around them.

This course will give you a comprehensive understanding of the building blocks of art. We’ll examine how artists use the elements of art and principles of design to create quality artwork, the concepts of aesthetics and criticism, and examine several Modern art styles.If you are new to studying art or are unsure about its value, you’ll quickly see that there is more to art than meets the eye! Art exposes you to a broad range of history, culture, and problem solving. Learning about and understanding art gives you another perspective on seeing the world around you. You will first explore the topic of what art is and how it is made as well as the ideas of aesthetics and art criticism. This will help you to understand how it is created and critiqued. Next, you will explore several art styles and movements that are characterized as Modern. Get ready for an adventure in art!

In this course, students will explore the world through many aspects. Where traditional geography classes emphasize our world’s physical geography, this class holds an added emphasis on human geography and the interaction of the two. The underlying question of “How do physical systems and human systems shape a place?” is constant to the world that you will study.

Geometry is designed to emphasize the study of the properties and applications of common geometric figures in two and three dimensions. It includes the study of transformations and right triangle trigonometry. Inductive and deductive thinking skills are used in problem solving situations, and applications to the real world are stressed. It also emphasizes writing proofs to solve (prove) properties of geometric figures. Students who complete Geometry should take Algebra II next.

Grammar and Composition is designed with the intent to adequately prepare students for more writing intensive English courses. The course provides students with detailed instruction on the basic rules and structure of the English language. Students will be tasked with learning standard paragraph structure and eventually will construct a traditional 5 paragraph essay. Students have the opportunity to learn about the importance of the writing process and what it entails, while employing their own creativity to produce quality writing. The end of the course also provides students with the process of public speaking and how to construct a speech and deliver it to the best of their ability.

This course is about “you.” Health focuses on the impact of lifestyle choices on wellness and health. Each chapter in the text deals with topics that are important to you. Subjects ranging from sexuality to drugs and nutrition to exercise will be studied. You will gain knowledge to help identify problems in any of these areas of your own life and learn ways to work through them. This will allow you to move toward a healthier lifestyle. This course will put you in charge of managing your health. During your studies, you will be encouraged to seek help in resolving problems. This help can come from you, your family and friends, or your community.

Lifetime Fitness focuses on the "fit-for-life" attitude. This course is a unique blend of learning, participating and experiencing. Students will learn about fitness—what it is, why it is important to your health, and how you can work on achieving it. In addition to reading of the textbook, the student will also complete a Fitness Portfolio that includes personal self-assessments and activities for each chapter. Students are also required to learn about, practice and write a report on two lifetime sports of their choosing: volleyball, golf, tennis, soccer, weight training, self-defense or bowling. Students must select two sports they have not participated in previously. The course can be taken for a full or half-credit.

Marketing allows you to discover how consumer and business wants and needs for products and services affect all businesses and global economies. This course you will gain a solid understanding of creating, advertising, and selling products.

As the foundational science, physical science explains everything we can observe around us. Physical science is a study of matter and energy. It is about both the physical world around us, the world we can see, and the sub-microscopic world which is so fine that even the most powerful of microscopes will not make it visible in a direct sense. It deals with the forces that shape the world and the ways that energy is used.

Physics is the study of motion. In this course, students will learn about motion in one and two dimensions, rotational motion, force, power, momentum, and energy. Students will explore topics such as thermodynamics, optics, and wave mechanics. Finally, they will gain a basic understanding of atomic subatomic physics, electricity, and magnetism.

The Pre-Algebra course helps introduce students to the wide range of topics they will learn in Algebra 1. The course begins with reviewing and solidifying the student's basic math skills with properties, integers, decimals, fractions and percents. the student will learn the fundamentals of creating and solving algebraic equations and further their understanding with applications of the content.

Psychology is the study of human behavior and mental processes. In this course, students will learn about the common human experiences, and understand how we construct meaning out of the world around us. This course covers the basic tenants of psychology, including the development of personality, emotion, abnormal psychology, and the major theories and therapies used to analyze behavior and treat mental disorders.

Refresher Math is a developmental program for all basic math skills with strong emphasis upon practice and application. The course covers all computational skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers, decimal numbers, fractions, and integers. Word problems are used to relate concepts to practical situations.

The courses introduces students to the many skills and concepts that are needed to be successful and lead a fulfilling life. Students will learn study skills that will help them succeed in future courses, while learning interesting facts about themselves. The textbook, Professionalism: Skills for Workplace Success, contains sixteen chapters, each covering an important basic skills. After completing this course, students will: Be able to demonstrate better reading, writing, studying and listening skills. Project a better self-image and positive attitudes. Budget all important resources more efficiently. Understand the importance of budgeting. Determine their preferred career and how to find a job in that field. Be able to self-assess your own skills, talents and qualities. Develop critical thinking skills that apply to decision making and problem solving. Be able to use positive communication skills.

Sociology offers a study of human relationships in society. Emphasis is placed upon culture, social structure, and the individual in society, societal institutions and social inequality. Students will examine the major sources of social change as well as minority groups and the impact of prejudice.

Spanish 1 introduces students to the Spanish language and culture through a combination of stories, narratives, pictures and audio clips. Equal emphasis is placed on developing skills in grammar, reading, and speaking this increasingly important language. Students will learn how to communicate in daily conversations, write sentences and pronounce the language by using the vocabulary and verb tenses they have learned in the course. Students will also learn geography and culture where Spanish is spoken natively.

Spanish 2 continues to build on the vocabulary, grammar and cultural concepts learned in Spanish 1. Students will engage in conversations, conjugate verbs in the present and past tenses, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. They will learn the content through a combination of reading stories, describing pictures and practicing their pronunciation of the language. In addition, they will understand the practices and perspectives of the Spanish and Hispanic cultures. Spanish 1 is a prerequisite.

Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus prepares students to continue on to Calculus. The first semester is a study of trigonometric functions, their graphs, and applications. Students will learn to solve right triangles and how to apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines. In the second semester, students will explore various types of functions, such as: radical, rational, polynomial, exponential, and logarithmic functions. They will also learn about polar coordinates, complex numbers, sequences, and series. Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry are prerequisites for this course.A Texas Instruments TI-30 calculator is recommended. Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry are prerequisites for this course.

The United States History course is designed as a survey of the significant developments in the U.S.'s past. Student's will explore events from the first peoples' to inhabit the land to President Obama's second term in office. Students will be engaged in the study of human experiences. By studying these experiences and actions of others, students will emerge with relevant skills and an enhanced capacity for informed citizenship, critical thinking, and simple awareness. Along with these items, students will learn about people and societies, and the importance of history in their own life which contributes to moral understanding. It allows for one to form an identify, and it enables the student to become a better citizen.

Use the Working for Success course to receive high school credit for your hard work! Working for Success is designed to aid the development of career knowledge as an integral part of an overall high school education. This course provides students the opportunity to assess their own performance, improve on the necessary skills for a successful career, and attain personal and career goals, all while in high school!Students following a career path that is paid while also attending high school at The Keystone School are eligible for this course. Requirement: The Work Agreement form must be completed and submitted for approval PRIOR TO beginning the work experience or course requirements after enrolling in the course. Prior work experience will not be accepted. All work must be completed after the enrollment date of the course. This is a Pass/Fail course.Course Objectives The student, work supervisor, and parent/guardian complete the Work Agreement Form and submit to the teacher of the course prior to beginning coursework. The student and work supervisor meet and go through the Working for Success Checklist – ensuring that the work supervisor agrees to evaluate the student twice throughout the course enrollment period using the rating sheets provided within the course. The work supervisor completes a questionnaire regarding the student’s work and the student submits it to the teacher. The student uses the daily log and timesheets included within the course to show at least 180 work hours and a daily log of work activities completed. After 90 work hours are completed by the student, the work supervisor uses the Supervisor Evaluation to evaluate the student’s work and it is submitted by the student to the teacher. This is repeated after 120 work hours and after 180 work hours. To complete the course, the student submits an essay describing their work experience, how these may relate to a future career, workplace readiness skills developed during employment, and career options this experience has created.

World History provides students with a thorough survey of the significant political, socioeconomic, and cultural features of human history from the beginnings of civilization to the contemporary period. Using both primary and secondary sources and document-based investigation, students trace the emergence of the interdependence between world regions—an interaction stimulated by European invasions and colonization and sustained by the contributions of the non-Western regions.

In this World Literature course, students will be exposed to many types of literature from around the globe. The course will cover the classics, some you may have heard of, and some you haven’t. Students will learn about culture, geography, and religious beliefs that go along with the literature and authors. In addition to the classics, students will be exposed to modern and contemporary authors and literature. Students will write a research paper and keep a journal of writing activities. This course has a heavy emphasis on writing, so be prepared to share your thoughts.
