From Flexibility to Hope: How Keystone Helped Me Keep Moving Forward

Keystone allowed me to learn from anywhere while exploring interests outside the classroom. During high school, I discovered a passion for character concept design for video games, and some of the projects I worked on eventually reached more than 100 million visits online. It also taught me something even more valuable: life doesn’t always follow the timeline you expect.

From Flexibility to Hope: How Keystone Helped Me Keep Moving Forward

At 19 years old, I wasn’t thinking about college applications or career plans. I was lying in an intensive care unit, listening to the steady rhythm of heart monitors while doctors worked to keep me alive.

Just months earlier, I had been planning my future. Suddenly, my days became filled with chemotherapy, surgeries, hospital stays, and more doctor’s appointments than I could count. My future, which had once felt so clear, became uncertain overnight.

Before any of that happened, I had enrolled at Keystone School simply because I wanted the flexibility of online learning. I never imagined that flexibility would become one of the greatest lessons of my life.

Like many students, my journey through high school wasn’t perfect. There was a season when I lost focus, and I graduated later than I had planned. At the time, I felt embarrassed. Looking back now, I realize graduating later wasn’t a failure. It was proof that success isn’t about finishing first. It’s about finishing.

I had no idea how important that lesson would become.

Within eighteen months, my life changed completely.

I got married.

I graduated from high school.

I lost my father.

Then, at just 19 years old, I was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Everything I thought I knew about my future disappeared.

Instead of preparing for college, I prepared for chemotherapy. Instead of thinking about exams, I focused on making it through another day. Cancer had spread throughout my body, and in November 2024 I was admitted to the ICU after a large tumor compressed my lungs, heart, and esophagus. It was one of the scariest moments of my life.

Through every appointment, treatment, and setback, one person never left my side: my husband.

He’s an active-duty member of the United States Air Force, and while people often saw me fighting cancer, very few saw everything he carried behind the scenes. He sat through every appointment, celebrated every small victory, and reminded me to keep believing on the days when hope felt difficult to find. I will always be grateful for the love and strength he gave me during the hardest chapter of our lives.

After six rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, I heard the words I had been praying for.

Cancer-free.

Recovery brought new challenges, but it also gave me something I hadn’t had in a long time: the chance to dream again.

One conversation during treatment completely changed how I saw my future.

My oncologist asked what I wanted to do after I recovered.

“I want to become a nurse,” I told him.

He smiled and asked, “Why not be a doctor?”

Those four words have stayed with me ever since.

Sometimes, all it takes is one person believing in you before you begin believing in yourself.

Today, I hope to serve in the United States Air Force while pursuing higher education in medicine, with the goal of working in women’s health. Along the way, I’ve found new ways to give back by volunteering in the Labor and Delivery and NICU units at my local hospital, supporting military families, and advocating for women’s health. My lymphoma journey has also been featured by the Lymphoma Research Foundation, and I was honored to share part of my story in my local newspaper.

When I look back, I realize Keystone gave me far more than a diploma.

It gave me the flexibility to learn in a way that fit my life, the confidence to keep going when my path looked different from everyone else’s, and the reminder that setbacks don’t have to define your future.

A year ago, I wasn’t sure I would live long enough to make plans.

Today, I’m building a future I once thought I’d never have.

If there’s one lesson my journey has taught me, it’s this: your timeline does not determine your success. Life may rewrite your plans, but that doesn’t mean your story is over. Sometimes the unexpected path becomes the one that shapes you the most.

Keystone taught me that even when life doesn’t go according to plan, there is almost always another way forward.

And for that, I’ll always be grateful.
