Students grow their vocabulary by leaning the meanings of words from the reading selections, as well as their ability to determine word meanings through strategy-based instruction on concepts such as word relationships, context clues, and word parts. Foundational concepts of phonological awareness and phonics are also included. Spelling instruction focuses on common spelling patterns and understanding how to apply them to words beyond those on the spelling lists.

Students also learn to focus on spelling patterns that are necessary to be fluent, proficient readers, writers, and spellers.

Students learn how to carefully read, interpret, and analyze literature and nonfiction works of cultural or historical significance appropriate to Grade 10. Examples of works studied include “The Pit and the Pendulum,” poems by Lord Byron and Ezra Pound, Nixon’s resignation speech, and the memoir Night. Students also learn about the formal writing process as they write a literary analysis essay.

We study literature to gain knowledge and understanding of its terms and techniques to enhance our appreciation of literature and our conversations with others about it. Literature has context and history which can make a difference in the amount and kind of pleasure and insight that you gain from literature. Also, according to the text, writing and discussing works of literature helps us in analyzing literature in greater depth and considering alternative views of both the works themselves and the situations and problems the works explore. Writing and discussing literature is an ongoing process that involves putting into words how and why certain works had such an effect on you and responding to what others say about it. This becomes a continual conversation because there is no single way to understanding a given text. You can explore a variety of ideas and thoughts.

Welcome to English 3! In this course, you’ll find a mix of older literature and authors you may have heard of before, and we’ll be introducing you to some newer literature and authors. It’s important to remember that literature tells stories, both directly and obviously in the writing, but also overall about the world around you. As historical events fall upon a timeline, so too does literature! You’ll see when different authors lived, what they wrote about, and how that all fits into historical events, called historical context. Wait, isn’t this a Literature course? Yes, it is, but much like other subjects, you’ll notice the topics connect with other aspects of your learning. Those connections will help you to better understand not only Literature, but how it fits into everything else you learn about—and will learn about. The historical figures, authors, and poets that you will explore within the Learning Guide and the reading materials make up the timeline of America. The readings won’t necessarily be in order on a timeline, but instead will be grouped by topic for you. We will learn about the historical context of those topics, so you will be able to fit them onto a timeline on your own. From the very beginning of American Literature through present day, you will experience the American thoughts through different time periods from both men and women. What makes up America is written from the thoughts of the country’s founding fathers to the fictional works of Poe to the poetry of Angelou, Hughes, and Dickinson. These anthologies encompass such a wide variety of types of writing that there is something for everyone to enjoy.

This is English 4, a 12th grade, senior level course the covers British and World Literature. You will work with many genres, including poetry, drama, short stories, novel, essay, oratory, and public documents. Everyone has a favorite book. It might be a book that a family member read to you as you were drifting off to sleep. It might be the first book you read by yourself. Now, much of your reading may be due to course and school requirement; if you think about it, you may enjoy some readings and dislike others, but you have to read them. You will likely have varying feelings about genres such as fan fiction, bestsellers, fiction, non-fiction, and of course, the classics. If you saw the movie Beowulf, you might be surprised to see the original story in your textbook, written during the Anglo-Saxon period. Archeologists are still trying to prove whether or not King Arthur and his Round Table are real or if it was just a story passed by traveling storytellers. English 10 is designed to build on the writing and literary skills of prior courses. Students will deepen their analyzation skills with units in Poetry and Short Story analysis. Students will also expand review and develop their grammatical skills to apply the knowledge to two writing units. The Personal Narrative unit will allow students to apply what they learned in the Short Story Unit to create a creative work, based on their personal experience. In the Opinion Writing Unit students will learn to determine their position on a topic, create a thesis based on that position, and then construct an essay to support that argument. Students will apply skills in research, MLA formatting, and persuasive techniques.

English 11 offers students the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the genres and movements of American literature, while also developing their vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. This course includes the study of diverse literary texts that represent the cultural context of their time and allows students to engage in the practice of analysis and interpretation, with the history of the United States reflected in each assignment. Upon completion of the course, students will have reviewed basic tenets of grammar and writing, created unique and developed interpretations of American literature, and established an understanding of how cultural context affects literary movements.

English 12 begins with a lesson on grammar skills. You will also practice real world writing, like filling out an application and writing a resume. You will also practice your composition skills by writing different types of paragraphs. You will also read a few short stories, including Edgar Allan Poe. There is a section on poetry that focuses on the theme of war. Finally, it will conclude with the theme of wealth.

English 6 is designed to provide students with a review of the essential language arts skills presented at this grade level. The course content will incorporate all different types of literature in both fiction and nonfiction categories. The class will focus on being about to read, explore, and analyze literary and informational texts and evaluate the information in them, conducting research and writing analytical and narrative pieces. It will also illustrate reading comprehension strategies to maximize understanding and functioning in academic situations. All of this will be introduced by a review of important grammar and writing at the grade level.

English 7 has four separate parts that are focused upon. The first focuses on the steps of the writing process: how they are broken down indivudally and how they all work together. The next two parts are focused on two themes. The first is survival and then friendship. You will learn about the parts of a plot and also read short stories focused on those two themes. The course concludes with a lesson about heros and Greek mythology.

English 8 is designed to provide students with a concise review of the proper use of English. Students will have the opportunity to learn about effective reading strategies to use before, during, and after reading; all of which are important to maximize comprehension. This course will review figurative language and allow students to identify, analyze, and design various types of figurative language. Students will practice reading literature while recognizing plot elements. Students will also discover the importance of reading informational texts. This course will give students the opportunity to differentiate between types of poems and the students will evaluate and create poems as a culminating assignment. This course will prepare students with the necessary skills for advancement through English courses.

English 9 focuses on building writing skills to prepare students for high school level English classes. Students will begin with a foundation in parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization. They will then apply and expand these skills to basic paragraph writing where they will learn how to create a topic sentence and how to expand details. They will also learn the four purposes of writing and will create examples of each. Students will then explore personal and business letter formats, to apply the skills from the previous units. The last two units focus on a literary analysis of short stories and poetry.

Grammar and Composition is designed with the intent to adequately prepare students for more writing intensive English courses. The course provides students with detailed instruction on the basic rules and structure of the English language. Students will be tasked with learning standard paragraph structure and eventually will construct a traditional 5 paragraph essay. Students have the opportunity to learn about the importance of the writing process and what it entails, while employing their own creativity to produce quality writing. The end of the course also provides students with the process of public speaking and how to construct a speech and deliver it to the best of their ability.

In the course, students will consider the themes of personal identity and coming of age as they engage in writing assignments designed to provide basic writing practice. Students will read several short literary pieces. Instruction will focus on ideas, organization, sentence fluency and conventions.

In this course, students will learn how to gather information, organize ideas, format stories for different forms of news media, and edit their stories for publication. The course will also examine the historical development of journalism and the role of journalism in society.

Students are introduced to public speaking as an important component of their academic, work, and social lives. They study public speaking occasions and develop skills as fair and critical listeners, or consumers, of spoken information and persuasion. Students study types of speeches (informative, persuasive, dramatic, and special occasion), read and listen to models of speeches, and prepare and present their own speeches to diverse audiences. Students learn to choose speaking topics and adapt them for specific audiences, to research and support their ideas, and to benefit from listener feedback. They study how to incorporate well-designed visual and multimedia aids in presentations and how to maintain a credible presence in the digital world. Students also learn about the ethics of public speaking and about techniques for managing communication anxiety.

In this World Literature course, students will be exposed to many types of literature from around the globe. The course will cover the classics, some you may have heard of, and some you haven’t. Students will learn about culture, geography, and religious beliefs that go along with the literature and authors. In addition to the classics, students will be exposed to modern and contemporary authors and literature. Students will write a research paper and keep a journal of writing activities. This course has a heavy emphasis on writing, so be prepared to share your thoughts.
