In this course, students continue learning about health and fitness. They learn about common illnesses and diseases and how to prevent illness. They will explore how to handle their emotions, build friendships, and ways to stay safe and make healthy choices. Students participate in fitness activities in each lesson. Students practice performance strategies like fielding and striking and develop fundamental movement patterns at different levels, speeds, and positions. The course emphasizes lifetime fitness habits, and students acquire tools to build mental, social, and emotional health through lessons about problem solving, stress reduction, and goal setting

Students learn how to identify behaviors that are healthy and how to promote them to others. The course builds on the knowledge students acquired in grade 4. Students are introduced to a variety of concepts including nutritional requirements; avoiding drugs, alcohol, and tobacco; self-esteem and stress management; and bullying.

Students will develop the knowledge and skills they need to make positive fitness decisions to stay active, safe, and informed, as teenagers and adults. The lessons and activities introduce important aspects of physical health and fitness and focus on helping students learn new fitness skills and stay active. Students will set fitness goals and assess their progress throughout the course. Students will use daily Fitness Plans to guide their physical activity and Fitness Logs to track their activity.

Agriculture has played an important role in the lives of humans for thousands of years. It has fed us and given us materials that have helped us survive. Today, scientists and practitioners are working to improve and better understand agriculture and how it can be used to continue to sustain human life. In this course, students learn about the development and maintenance of agriculture, animal systems, natural resources, and other food sources. Students also examine the relationship between agriculture and natural resources and the environment, health, politics, and world trade.

This course is meant to be a first-time introduction to computer science, and does not require students to come in with any computer programming experience. However, we recommend that students take our Introduction to Computer Science prior to our AP courses). Students who have completed our Intro to CS course will be able to apply knowledge of concepts covered in the Intro course to the more advanced setting of the AP courses.It is recommended that a student in the AP Computer Science A Semester 2 course has successfully completed a first-year high school algebra course with a strong foundation of basic linear functions, composition of functions, and problem-solving strategies that require multiple approaches and collaborative efforts. In addition, students should be able to use a Cartesian (x, y) coordinate system to represent points on a plane. Finally, students learn about the relationship of material items to culture and what we can learn about past societies from these items.

In Biotechnology 1b:Unlocking Nature’s Secrets, you’ll build on your knowledge from Biotechnology: Introduction and learn how this field seeks to cure such deadly diseases as cancer and malaria, develop innovative medicine, and effectively feed the world through improved agricultural systems. Learn about some of the challenges biotechnology faces today, such as the growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria and questions about the safety of commercially produced genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Business Law focuses on the application of law to business operations and transactions in the United States. It is designed to provide students with an overview of the legal system, including statutes and regulations that affect businesses, families, and individuals in a variety of ways. All of you will eventually assume the role of citizen, worker, and consumer in society. This course will provide you with a solid foundation in understanding legal issues that impact businesses, but will also focus on “real life” situations that rely on the law. These “real life” situations may apply to you someday. Business topics in this course focus on legal regulations, which govern modern society including Internet privacy and security, ethics, and computer crime. Other topics covered include an exploration of contracts, agency, and negotiable instruments. Personal Finance topics include buying and insuring a car, renting an apartment, buying a home, marriage, divorce, and the use of personal credit. Our lives are guided and regulated by our society’s legal expectations. Consumer laws help protect us from faulty goods; criminal laws help protect society from individuals who harm others; and family law handles the arrangements and issues that arise in areas like divorce and child custody. This course focuses on the creation and application of laws in various areas of society. By understanding the workings of our court system, as well as how laws are actually carried out, students become more informed and responsible citizens.

This one-semester elective is designed to increase students’ knowledge of, and ability in, using the skills necessary for everyday living. Life Skills emphasizes defining personal values, goal-setting and planning, and solving problems.
